I am so discouraged. I live in a riding that is a Conservative stronghold (chokehold?) and I don’t understand how people can vote this way. This province is facing a continued decline into Trumpist values and governance goals. What can we do to protest? How do we protect the rights of those who will suffer the inevitable erosion of much needed social safety nets? The Ford regime stands for big business interests, not the people who voted for them. Increased access to alcohol, gutting the health care system, and building more highways at the expense of bike lanes and healthy cities—a toxic combination. They really don’t care about citizens.
Bonnie Crombie's campaign made many mistakes and I am still glad to have voted for Nate. That being said, it remains the case that Crombie grew the OLP more than any of the other party leaders did for their own respective parties. By growing the party by 6% of the vote, she achieved a vote share gain that slightly exceeds the *total* vote share that the Greens have ever achieved under Mike Schreiner.
Cycling out a still-fresh and unknown Leader while the governing class is still in place would be asking for more of the same in 2029.
I am sure that we can agree that she should not be paid a salary as Leader going forward. I do have some constitutional amendments in mind to rework accountability for the Leader's Office: someday I would like to submit an amendment to replace leadership reviews with regular leadership contests. Stay tuned for those.
Even sadder is that US style healthcare is going to be phased in with less opposition. Public education will get worse as well. This goes beyond provincial political science.
Before the election, Marit Stiles failed to share any vision for Ontario. I did not know what her untilmate goals were to make Ontario a better place to live and work. She did not explain how an NDP government would improve the lives of Ontarians. Before the election, I heard nothing about what she would do for healthcare, education, employment, housing, the environment, and governance including improving municipal governance. Marit Stiles was a blank slate at the start of her leadership. She was a blank slate at the beginning of the election campaign. Only during the campaign did she mention few issues.
I am afraid that Marit Stiles will pull an Andrea Horwath or Jagmeet Singh by running for mediocrity again.
Charter City, please?
Well, Doug Ford would have to agree to that. And he doesn't want to!

The Ontario Liberals were always doomed for defeat so long as the governing class of the party is rigidly opposed to bringing back policy debates and resolutions votes: https://stefanklietsch.substack.com/p/ontario-liberals-decisively-shut
