Given your view of progressivism shouldn’t you be in the NDP. Unless you feel that’s a waste because they will never be in power.
In which case you might understand Carney’s position on the two taxes.
- the previous government is responsible for taking too long to get the tax in place and rebates out and then being unable to stop themselves taking some of the big money pile for the green how can we spend this plan.
This should have been a success with most people seeing a net gain. Now it’s an electoral albatross.
- your views on capital gains omit all the folks who own a cottage and want to pass it on to their kids. That’s a lot of normal Canadians who don’t mind paying their share but want to trust it is well managed and won’t squeeze them so much their children are unable to enjoy what they had.
If you own multiple residences, then you should pay taxes on the sale of your extra land, the same way you would pay taxes on the sale of stocks. Why should land be treated differently from other capital gains? The people you describe, who own multiple homes when my generation cannot even own one, are landed gentry. They are wealthy and they SHOULD pay higher taxes.
It should not be treated differently. But you missed my point. A lot of ordinary Canadians have a cottage that will attract the additional capital gains. To assume this only applies to the very wealthy is incorrect.
You also didn’t explain why you are not working in a more left wing party?
Are you making a trade off between relevance and ideals?
I split off a very small piece of land from my lot on which my house is. 85 ft wide. The tax was more than my gross annual income that year. It was not anywhere close to a million dollar sale, just barely over the capital gains amount.
I am hardly gentry, don't own multiple homes, I'm very middle class, working hard just to make ends meet. I paid as much tax that year as I would normally pay in four. People like me pay what they owe. There's nowhere to hide anything. There must be other, better ways to tax "the rich" than just increasing the capital gains tax. Ordinary people, with a once in a lifetime transaction, shouldn't have to pay 2/3's in capital gains taxes for a transaction that is barely over the "limit". It's a very blunt tool to tax the "rich" that scoops up ordinary folks.
People have an emotional attachment to their cottages. So yes, logically you are correct, but you risk losing many voters if you push it too hard. BTW the liberals did make some excellent reforms to improve the fairness of the tax system around income splitting and investments held in holding companies. They should have been lauded for these reforms, but instead, were crucified for them. So I can understand why they were a bit apprehensive about increasing capital gains and, in the end, decided it was too great a risk.
Good piece. There is a problem when centrists go right, abandon the needs of the people, while swearing that they are doing everything in their power to make things better as things get worse for the people and better for the rich. The result is Donald and Elon. We came in a hair’s breadth of getting such a government in BC.
Sadly, the carbon tax is now radioactive. I wish it weren't so, but it doesn't matter what I wish. Abandoning the carbon tax is the only way to prevent poilievre from being elected. Trudeau's liberals, along with the NDP, instituted many excellent programs that help people who need help. It isn't that surprising that the electorate has moved to the right and we should hope for a liberal victory because those programs are still in their early stages and would be very easy for a conservative government to kill. Politics is the art of the possible, and right now, maintaining the status quo is possible; pushing further left is not.
When you use terms like 'landed gentry' many people will tune you out regardless of the strength of your arguments.
The carbon tax has always been poorly communicated, simply by virtue of the fact that the way that it was introduced and implemented was done without foresight. It was introduced with the ill-conceived expectation that somehow provinces would be coerced into implementing carbon taxes and that they would somehow not heap blame onto the federal government. There should always have been a single standard national carbon price, there should have been fewer exemptions, and the messaging should have been consistent. The carbon tax debate can be won, if Liberals do not allow themselves to get spooked by Poilievre's lies.
The Liberals are only liberal relative to the conservative party. Compared to the NDP nobody would consider them left. Liberals are okay with private intervention into our medical system and are okay with disastrous public private partnership agreements.
Trudeau was on the left of the liberal party and, frankly, it’s one of the reasons the party drove him out.
That said, the singular focus right now is voting in a war time PM and not letting Poilievre anywhere near that role.
The LPC isn’t “liberal”. They’re sometimes progressive, sometimes not progressive, but they have clearly ceased being liberal.
The main hallmark of liberalism is a belief in the freedom of the individual. There are limits, (swing your fist, end of face, yada yada), but the default of liberalism is the freedom of the individual without government coercion.
But the LPC now defaults to restrictions on speech and thought they deem “harmful”.
The only reason we don’t laugh at the absurdity of the name is because people incorrectly think progressivism and liberalism are the same thing because the morphing from one to the other was gradual.
Gotta love these weak ass progressive takes. Read the frigging room. Keeping with progressive ideals tanked the Liberals and is certainly going to tank the NDP. The status quo isn't working. Look at what's happening in Europe and the US. And of course the "progressives" like you who put Karina Gould in first on their ballots will always say that moving to the centre means going right wing. Clearly the message didn't resonate, even with the 40% of Liberal members who voted. Ugh.
I wholeheartedly agree with Howard Loewen's take in response too.
Vote your conscience. AND PLEASE strategically, f you don’t like conservative politics.
There is honestly only one other liberal party that stands a chance of beating CCP right now. Liberals, led by Mark Carney.
I would like to vote Green but, alas. I do not Canadians to want end up in a 66 percent of people who either ‘gave Trump/poilievre a chance’ scenario believing his lies or didn’t vote at all, and end up like the states right now.
Americans are divided. The popular vote between Trump/Harris was very close. Of course, MAGA cultists don't act that way. They believe their hero has a huge mandate.
I'm thinking Jake could vote NDP. They have seats and can form a coalition with Liberals. But it's his decision.
Canadians are united. We have to keep our politicians scared of us, or they will sell us out. If an election is called now, polls suggest a minority government situation.
Voting 3rd party might end up splitting the liberal vote (giving CCP edge), unless in a super safe NDP riding. I recommend checking your ridings and see if you can stomach it for our sovereignty. But your vote is your vote. This is Federal and is either centre-left or far-right.
There are still many municipal elections were so much of the decision-making happens and movements are. Charlie Angus is recommending Elbows Up organising groups communities. All in on all that.
I hate to sound snarky, but the Liberal Party of Canada has been Right Wing since Chrétien/Martin were elected in 1993. They just perfected the U. S. Democrat approach of campaigning on the left and governing on the right. (The Liberal Party of Ontario under McGuinty/Whynne was no different.)
The only reasons that Trudeau actually did anything progressive was due to the Pandemic and because of Jagmeet Singh and CASA. Even then, it was only begrudgingly and the bare minimum.
Peter, you used a lot of words (a lot) to express your opinion of Mark Carney in his FIRST DAY of representing our country, and as the unanimously elected leader of the Liberal party. Take a pill, settle down and join the rest of us proud Canadians in the fight against the destructive and divisive nature of the so-called conservatives. ELBOWS UP CANADA!
I think the ballot question in the leadership race was “who will prevent Canada from being annexed by the United States?”. In the context of that concern, I’m not sure many people are voting based on who will make Canada more just and fair, who will protect the environment, who will fix healthcare, etc. It’s reasonable that even people who would normally be voting to achieve progressive aims would be distracted by wanting to maintain sovereignty.
You sound like someone living in an echo chamber who thinks the liberals are the party of the left or the progressive party. They are the centre hard stop. It’s time they are brought back to reality. Wake the fuck up people.
At some point the NDP organization gave up hope of actually forming a govt with our voting system and just started phoning it in. While there are exceptional individuals in the party, the organization uses them like props. Like AOC for the Dems. They will not organically transform, so need to be decimated in the polls. Only then is there a chance to start from scratch with entirely new management, preferably allowing no one over the age of 45.
Nailed it.

I'm in the Maritimes btw. The federal NDP have been shut out for quite awhile, although there may be some hope:
https://thewalrus.ca/the-ndp-is-hoping-for-a-breakthrough-in-atlantic-canada/
CCP is not representative of conservatives in the Maritimes, so it looks good for the Liberals.

Ok
The party needs it's left wing opionators.
Very healthy.
“Now??? Has been for some time.
It's too bad the NDP cannot be that progressive Canadian party that the country desperately needs.
I think the ballot question in the leadership race was “who will prevent Canada from being annexed by the United States?”.
